Classism and Prejudice in Today´s Society - 1356 Words

In today’s society people are viewed as being in different classes depending on how much money they bring in. The categorization of people is known as classism. Classism is simply the prejudice or in favor of people belonging to a particular social class. Classism is known as one of the largest social problems plaguing the world today. Classes are formed according to how the rules of the following institutions; government regulations and economic status. It is held in place by a system of beliefs and cultural attitudes that ranks people according to their; economic status, family lineage, job status, and level of education. There are three major classifications to which people are titled. They include upper or high class which includes the†¦show more content†¦They tend to be ambitious and value success, community responsibilities, hard work and excellences both in and out of the classroom setting. Many of the upper class students, like the lower class students, are e xtremely aware of their class and may be embarrassed about their advantages. They tend to hide their class background, while at the same time they are taking their freedoms for granted (Class and the Classroom.). The quote from the famous book â€Å"To Kill A Mockingbird† summarizes the main classes in today’s society. It is as followed: You know something, Scout? I’ve got it all figured out, now. I’ve thought about it a lot lately and I’ve got it figured out. There are four kinds of folks in the world. There’s the ordinary kind like us and the neighbors, there’s the kind like the Cunningham’s out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump, and the Negroes (Lee, Harper). To prevent classism in our classrooms we need to address the following; be aware of who are students are and their backgrounds, increase the amount of diversity in our curriculum to meet the needs of each class represented, and finally we need to w ork individually and collaborate to change classroom and school practices that down ground students.
